Khan began his career in 1973, writing dialogues and screenplay for movies like Daag, Deewar, and Trishul. He branched out into acting in 1980, playing supporting roles in films like Lawaaris, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, and Coolie. He acted in over 300 films, including Baap Numbri Beta Dus Numbri, Shola Aur Shabnam, Hero No. 1, and Khuddar.
In addition to acting, Khan was a prolific screenwriter, writing dialogues and stories for over 100 films. He wrote the screenplay and dialogues for the blockbuster Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994). He also directed two films and produced two.
